The son of John H. and Sarah H. Marks married Mary Douglas Ruffin in 1871. On 20 April 1861, Captain Edmund Ruffin Jr., signed Edward up with Company F of the 5th Virginia Cavalry, known as the Prince George Cavalry. On 29 April 1862, he was elected Fourth Sergeant.
