Eliza (Marks) Matthews was born on 24 May 1803 in Reading, Berkshire, England.
Eliza married Charles Matthews 9 August 1828 at Thatcham in Berkshire.
Eliza died on 7 Aug 1889 in Nelson, New Zealand. [1]
....Mrs Matthews, of Hardy street, where she died yesterday at the good old age of 84. Mrs Matthews came out with her husband and family in 1842 in the ship Olympus, and among the older settlers was so well known that to many of them " Granny Matthews " was familiar as a household word. Her husband and sons were the champion shearers of their day. and all were industrious and persevering settlers, and all of them were industrious and persevering settlers, one of them having by dint of hard work and thrift secured for himself a fine property in Marlborough. The old lady was full of activity and energy up to a late period of her life, but for the last few years she has been bedridden and a great sufferer.[2]
She was buried in the Wakapuaka Cemetery on the 9 August 1889. Her grave is in Block 3, Plot 056. [3][4]
