Samuel was born in 1844 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was the son of Henry Marks and Rebecca Cheeks. He died in 1929 and was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Stevensville, Ravalli County, Montana.[1]
In 1850, Samuel was living with his parents and siblings in the Steele Creek Township of Mecklenburg County.[2]
