Biography

Morris Marks was born in January 1901 to Russian immigrant parents, Samuel Marks and his wife, Lena Mervis, both of whom emigrated around 1891. Samuel immigrated from Polish Russia and Lena immigrated from Lithuanian Russia. (The 1910 census lists Samuel's place of birth as Russia but the 1920 census lists it as Poland--large parts of Poland were "owned" by Russia. "The Russian Partition of Poland was made an official province of the Russian Empire in 1867. In early 20th century, a major part of the Russian Revolution of 1905 was the Revolution in the Kingdom of Poland (1905–1907."[1]By 1910, Samuel and Lena were living in Detroit with their older son, Harry, who worked in the automobile industry, also born in Russia, and young Morris. Morris also had an older brother, Michael (b. 1897) and a younger brother, Ralph (b. 1906). Morris' father was a wage earner, working as a "helper" in a screw works factory and his mother was a "huckster" whose work location was listed as "on street." I take this to mean that she sold product from a street stand, given that she and her husband later were proprietors of a grocery.[2] By 1920, Morris was finishing up high school and his parents were grocers, working on their own account. The family had moved from Sherman Street to Riverdale Street in Detroit.[3]

On July 3, 1921, at the age of 21 and while he was a student in college, Morris married Gertrude Caplan, a school teacher born in Russia and from Steubenville, Ohio, age 20.[4] By 1930, the couple had three daughters, Essie, Shirley, and Marian. The 1930 census lists Morris' occupation as a physician, in general practice. Morris graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in 1924 and and the Detroit College of Law in 1937. The 1940 census lists his occupation as a lawyer in private practice. He had five daughters and a son:

  1. Esse Marks (b. 1924)
  2. Shirley Z. Marks (b. 1927)
  3. Marion Marks (b. 1930)
  4. Ruth Ann Marks (b. 1931)
  5. Judith Marks (b. 1934)
  6. Daniel Marks (b. 1940)

The family lived in Northlawn in Detroit.[5][6]

Living in Southfield, Michigan, Morris had a long career in industrial medicine and was active in the community. According to his obituary, he served on the board of the Detroit chapter of Michigan Association of Emotionally Disturbed Children. He was a member of the Pisgah Lodge of B'nai Brith and a charter member of the Detroit chapter of the American Academy of General Practitioners.[7] Morris died at the age of 59 and is buried in Machpelah Cemetery in Ferndale, Michigan (Section: 5 Lot: 3 Grave: 414J).[Section: 5 Lot: 3 Grave: 414J]
