Francis Marion Marr was born 20 Aug 1860 in Grayson County, Kentucky to John C. Marr (b 28 Jan 1827 in Green Co., KY, d 6 Jul 1913 in Grayson, KY) and Lucy J. Talley (b abt 1835 in Taylor Co., KY). [1]
In 1870, he was 9, residing in Precinct 5, Grayson County, KY with his father John, 43, his mother Lucy, 37, and his siblings William, 14, Mary, 12, Finis, 7, and Louisa, 2. The family was white. His father was a farmer, his mother was a housekeeper, and his brother William worked on the farm. Everyone in the family was born in Kentucky. The value of his father John's personal estate was $250. None of the children were in school. William and Mary could not write, and Mary could not read. [2]
In 1880, he was 19 (Census listed him as 17), residing in Rock Creek, Grayson County, KY with his father, 53, his mother, 45, his siblings Mary, 22, Finis, 17, Louisa, 12, J.A., 9, and a baby not named yet, 1 month old (born in May 1880), and his paternal uncle G.B. Marr, 55. Francis helped on the farm. His mother was disabled in some way. Louisa and J.A. were in school. Louisa could not write. His father John's father (Jonathan) was born in VA and John's mother (Mahala) was born in KY. His mother Lucy's parents (Archibald and Mary) were both born in Virginia. [3]
He married Cora Belle Womack 7 Dec 1884 in Benton County, Arkansas. He was 24, and she was 15. [4]
In 1900, he was 39 or 40 (Census listed him as 59), residing in Dickson, Benton County, Arkansas with his wife Cora Belle, 30, their son Eugene Clarence Marr, 10, their son Chester Arthur Marr, 7, their daughter Ruth Marr, 5, and a boarder and housekeeper, Elizabeth C. Nichols, 22 (born Nov 1877). He was a dry goods merchant. He could not read, but he could write and speak English. He owned the family's house, and it was not a farm. He and Cora had been married for 15 years. Cora was the mother of 5 children, 3 of whom were still living. Everyone in the household could read, write, and speak other than Ruth. His mother Cora's parents (James and Elizabeth) were both born in Tennessee.
In 1910, he was 49, residing at Jasper Street, Aurora Ward 1, Lawrence County, Missouri with his wife Cora, 40, and their son Clarence, 20, son Chester, 17, daughter Ruth, 14, daughter Mable, 8, and son Virgil, 3. Both of his parents were born in Virginia. His wife's parents were born in TN. His children were all born in AR except for Virgil born in MO. He was a wage-earning laborer doing general work. His house was owned and mortgaged. Cora was the mother of 8 children, 5 of whom were still living. The 4 oldest children were attending school and the 3 oldest children could read and write. [5]
In 1920, he was 59, residing at South Second Street, Gravette, Benton County, Arkansas with his wife Cora, 50, and their daughter Mable, 16, and son Virgil, 13. The children were attending school, and everyone in the family could read and write. His parents were both born in KY. His wife Cora's father was born in TN and Cora's mother was born in AR. He was a canning factory manager. He owned the family's home free and clear. [6]
He died 25 Jan 1929 in Benton County, AR and was buried at Centerton Cemetery. [7][8]
