Biography

Birth Baptism 1861 Brandesburton

Frances Marr was born in 1861 in Brandesburton in East Yorkshire. ^[1] She is the eldest daughter of Thomas Marr omnibus proprietor and his wife Frances Dunn.

Death of Parents 1878-1880

In 1878 Frances mother, also called Frances, died aged only 42, and in 1880 her father, Thomas Marr farmer, landowner and omnibus proprietor died aged 54. His apparent wealth disappeared, and his teenage children were forced to find their own way in the world.

Marriage 1881 Beverley St Mary's

No doubt Frances early marriage was caused at least in part by her parents' deaths. She married George Sellers 24 a butler, in Beverley St Mary's church in February 1881. ^[2]

At the census soon after, they are living at 5 Mill Lane, Beverley. ^[3]

Beverley, North Bar Without 1891

In 1891 George and Frances Sellers have been joined in Beverley by Frances' younger sister, Gertrude, at 16 a confectioner's assistant. George is described as foreman in a yard, but the type of yard is obscured by the enumerators heavy pencil: perhaps livery (horses for hire)? Their home is in North Bar Street, but the presence of Peel Place nearby shows this is the west side of what is now called North Bar Without: the half of the street outside North Bar. ^[4]

Grimsby 1901 Pub Managers

In 1901 George and Frances Marr have moved to Grimsby, where they seem to be managing a pub. They are at the Yarborough Tap, where they are managing the Hotel Vaults. Contrary to the usual custom of the time, their joint role is recognised. ^[5]

Widowed 1906 Grimsby

Frances' husband George Henry Sellers dies still in Grimsby, in 1906. He 49 but is recorded as 47. ^[6]

Widow,Servant 1911 Twickenham

Frances Sellers, now a widow, is General Servant, domestic to a brother and sister in Twickenham, a smart area in southwest London. ^[7]

Death 1922 Richmond, Surrey

Frances Sellers dies in Richmond, Surrey only a few miles from where she was a servant in 1911. She is now just 60. ^[8]
