James has Missouri as his birthplace for 1870 and 1880. But Texas is listed as birthplace for the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. His older sister Theodosia was born in Missouri in July 1866. James was born 22 months later, and resided in Missouri for the 1870 census taken July, 1870. So James mother would have to have her baby Theodosia, traveled to Texas and had another baby, (James) and then gone back to Morgan County, Missouri to be counted in the 1870 census. There are four years for all of this to happen. Although unlikely, it is certainly possible.

James death certificate states he was born in Texas. The informant on this death certificate, was his second wife Mary, whom he married in 1910. She may not have known that much about his family. She stated that she did not know what his mother's maiden name was or where she was born.

Yes, that is very interesting. I guess we need to learn more about what C.C. Marriott was up to in those early years after the Civil War. I do know that Sedalia was an early market for Texas cattle before the drives started going further west. Farmers in Missouri were complaining that the Texas cattle were infecting their cattle and caused a ruckus.

I did check county tax records in Texas for C.C. Marriott during that time and found nothing.
