Biography

Peter was born about 1712 in Sussex Delaware or England. His father was Peter Marsh and family tree information shows his mother as Mary Molyneaux, daughter of Viscount William Molyneux and Bridget (Lucy) Molyneux.

His father died in 1725, leaving Peter half of the home plantation. Bequests were: to son Peter Marsh – half part of home plantation when he shall arrive to the age of twenty years; to son Joseph Marsh – the half part of the same plantation formerly belonging to John Heburn (Hepburn?), when twenty years old; to son James Marsh – 200 acres bought from Richard Hinman, when twenty; to daughter Elizabeth Marsh £20. The will also directed: “My desire is that my children may have learning and be paid out of my estate by my executors”

In 1735, Peter sold a 224 acre tract of land in Sussex to Charles Perry.

He married 1st Esther Purnell and they had children:

He next married Agnes Field and they had daughter:

1. Hester

There are photographs of the Peter Marsh house, in Rehoboth Beach Delaware, built c. 1742, available on-line at the Library of Congress [1]

Significance: This house, built in 1742, with a timber frame and unpainted, cypress shingles, is typical of early domestic architecture in Sussex County.

Peter Marsh died in Sussex County, Delaware in 1769. He is buried in Rehoboth, Sussex, Delaware.

Peter Marsh's will, signed 6 July 1769 leaves bequests to :

Wife: Agnes Marsh

Sons: Peter Marsh (bequest of land owned by his grandfather, Peter Marsh); Thomas Purnall Marsh (not yet twenty one); John Marsh (not yet twenty one); Philip Marsh (not yet twenty one -- will refers to his schooling). The will also mentions property previously belonging to their brother Joseph Marsh, who predeceased his father.

Daughters: Mary Maul [Maull], Hester Marsh (not yet twenty one -- will refers to her schooling); Sarah Marsh (not yet twenty one -- will refers to her schooling)

The will named wife Agness Marsh and son Peter Marsh as executors. It was proved 19 August 1769.

Peter Marsh's will names nine enslaved people: Jacob, a man, bequeathed to son Peter Marsh; Cesar, a boy, bequeathed to son John Marsh; Rachel, a girl, bequeathed to son Philip Marsh; Dinah, bequeathed to son Thomas Purnell Marsh; Dinah's child, unnamed, bequeathed to son Thomas Purnell Marsh; Rose, a girl, bequeathed to daughter Mary Maull; Edmond, a man, bequeathed to daughter Hester Marsh; Philip, a boy, bequeathed to daughter Sarah Marsh; Will, a man, "made over by deed of gift to my son Jos. Marsh, deceased, now to be divided among [his three sons].
