Charles was baptised on 7 June 1829 in Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England.[1][2]

When Charles was 23 he married Lavinia White on 21 November 1852 in Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England. The couple had 5 children: Charles Edwin Marsh, Maria Elizabeth Marsh, Frank Marsh, William Marsh and Rosina C Marsh.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]
