Henry Pyband Marsh was born on 31 December 1880 at Sheffield, Yorkshire. His date of birth was recorded in the 1939 Register. [1]
Henry Pyband Marsh married Lizzie Simcox on 3 January 1900 at the parish church of Brightside, Sheffield. Their marriage certificate recorded Henry was a bachelor aged 22 and a crane driver. His father was named as Joseph March, also a crane driver. Lizzie was a spinster aged 20. Her father was named as Edward Simcox (deceased), a labourer. At the time of their marriage Henry was residing at 4 Lincoln Pl and Lizzie at 41 Bland St. Their witnesses were Annie Jane Bullous and Sarah Elizabeth Winter.
This couple had seven known children named Annie Elizabeth Marsh [7 March 1900], Jessie March [13 November 1901], Evelyn Marsh [6 July 1905], Edith Marsh [21 October 1907], Joseph Marsh [25 September 1910], Elsie Marsh [1913] and Edna Marsh [1915].
Most of their children were baptised at St. Thomas, Brightside, Annie on 29 March 1900, Jessie on 4 December 1901, Evelyn on 27 July 1905, Edith on 6 November 1907, Joseph on 12 October 1910 and Elsie on 19 March 1913. Their dates of birth, where recorded, have been shown above. In 1900, 1905 and 1907 the family was living at 41 Bland St, in 1901 at 61 Chinley St, in 1910 at 37 Adetts St and in 1913 at 37 Bland St. Henry was working as a crane driver except in 1905 when he was a labourer.
Daughter Jessie died in 1901 aged 1 month. She was buried on 19 December at Christ Church, Attercliffe.
The 1911 census recorded this couple had had 6 children born prior to this census, 2 of whom had died in childhood. The names of one of their deceased children is unknown.
At the time of the 1901 census the family was residing at 61 Chinley St, Attercliffe cum Darnall, Sheffield. Henry, aged 20, was employed as a steam crane driver. Lizzie was aged 21 and daughter Annie was only 1. [RG13/4385 13 Pg 17]
In 1911 the family was living at 37 Adsetts St, Grimesthorpe, Sheffield. Aged 30, Henry was working as a crane driver at the steel works. Lizzie was aged 31. Children Annie, Evelyn, Edith and Joseph were aged 11, 5, 3 and 6 months respectively. Lizzie’s mother Elizabeth Simcox, aged 72, was also living with them.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Henry and Lizzie were residing at 48 Everingham Crescent, Sheffield. Henry, aged 59, was still working as a crane driver. Lizzie, the date of her birth incorrectly shown as 16 January 1879, was aged 58 years. She was actually born in 1881.
Henry Pyband Marsh died in 1945 at the Royal Infirmary, Sheffield aged 64 years. He was buried at the Shiregreen Cemetery on 22 March 1945. [Section A, Grave No. 1080].
Lizzie died in 1960 at 48 Everingham Cres aged 79 years. She was buried with Henry at the Shiregreen Cemetery on 29 January 1960.
