Capt. Seth Orlando Marsh was the son of Joseph Marsh and Hanna Rigby. He married Missouri Elizabeth “Molly” Tidd on September 9, 1858, in Hancock County, IN. To this union were born:
Mary S. Marsh 1860 – 1861 Clara E. (Marsh) Anderson 1868 – 1898 Lida Mae (Marsh) Hall 1869 – 1939 Howard Harrison Marsh 1871 – 1942 Bertie Belle (Marsh) Swafford 1872 – 1918 Gilbert Hayes Marsh 1874 – 1948
Seth served on the Union side in the Civil War. In 1861 he served 3 months in Company I, 8th Infantry Regiment, with a rank of Private. He later enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D, Indiana 51st Infantry Regiment, on 14 Dec 1861, and was promoted to Full Captain on 17 Jun 1865.
He served as one of the directors of the Black Hills School near Chillicothe, which opened in 1881, and he was responsible for building the fence in front of the schoolhouse in 1884. In 1896 he owned land along the Grand River in Smith Township, Carroll County, MO.
