Mary was born in 1838 in Boston, Massachusetts.
She was the wife and widow of Civil War veteran Major John Whittier Messer Appleton of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.
She passed away in 1918 and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Charleston, West Virginia.
1860 census gives her middle initial as E. Unclear where middle name Rice is coming from in the Find a Grave entry, though 1870 and 1880 census do give her middle initial as R.
