Biography

William, son of William Marshall, was born in 1607 probably at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, England and died Dec 1673 at Charles County, MD.^[1]

He married first on 29 May 1630, at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, ENG, Margaret BAYNE.^[1][2] William married second before 10 Jun 1656, at St. Mary's County, MD, Katherine PAYNE?.^[1] Various trees say he had up to 15 children, but only the following born at Pateley Bridge and Charles County between 1630 and 1667 seem likely; children with wife Margaret (b. Pateley Bridge; surname MARSHALL):

He was transported to MD in 1635 possibly by way of Virginia by Thomas WESTON.^[1] On 23 Jul 1641, William was on a list of 16 men who chose Geo Pye in Francis Gray's place at Saint Georges Hundred, MD.^[1] On 20 Mar 1650, the rent rolls listed 150 acres on the west side of the Wicomico River in the possession of John Fendall, noting "John Fendall for (4) Marshall Orphans."^[1]

He was called cousin William Marshall by the will of Christopher HEBDEN dated 1636. The will also named his brother Thomas and sister Helen Darnbrooke.^[1]

He was called cousin William Marshall the elder by the will of William MARSHALL of Fell Beck House dated 6 Sep 1650 at Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire, ENG. The will mentioned the testators wife Jane, son-in-law John Oddye and wife Dorothy, daughters Grace and Ann. Executors were his cousin William Marshall, brother Thomas and sister Ellen. It also mentioned cousin William Marshall the younger and sister Dorothie Marshall.^[1] A deposition dated 14 May 1657, called him "William Marshall, age 50."^[1]

William's will dated 22 Apr 1673 mentioned his son William (to have 4 unnamed tracts), son Joshua (to have 525 acres of Two Friends in Charles Co and cattle mark obtained by testator's marriage to Katherine EBDEN), daughter Elizabeth (under age 21 to have 525 acres of Two Friends), children (unnamed, to have residue of estate equally), and brother Francis Wyne (to have charge of underage son Joshua under age 21).^[1]
