Biography

Sarah Elizabeth Marshall was born about 1807 at Dromore, County Down, Ireland. She was a daughter of Reverend Benjamin Marshall and Judith Hamilton.[1]

Sarah married Henry Osborne in 1828 at County Tyrone.[1]

On the advice of one of Henry's older brothers, the young couple promptly migrated to the Colony of New South Wales, arriving in May 1829. Henry made a 'handsome profit' on a £3000 consignment of Irish linen upon arrival in Sydney.[1]

They settled upon a grant of 2,560 acres (1,036 ha) in the Illawarra, near the present town of Dapto. This property, that Henry named Marshall Mount in honour of his wife, entitled him to some twenty-five labourers. He went in for dairying and at the same time bred large numbers of young cattle. He soon began to acquire large holdings of land in the area between the Murrumbidgee and Murray Rivers southwards from Wagga Wagga. By the 1850s he owned very large holdings in the Illawarra, and in the Mount Keira and other coal-mines in the Maitland district. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1851 and was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1856.[1][2]

Sarah and Henry raised a healthy family of ten sons and three daughters:

  1. Jane Osborne (1830-)
  2. Henry Hill Osborne (1831-)
  3. Patrick Hill Osborne (1832-1902)
  4. Alick Osborne (1834-95)
  5. Charlotte Osborne (1836-75), married surname Redall
  6. Benjamin Marshall Osborne (1837-1912)
  7. Archibald Osborne (1839-)
  8. Hamilton Osborne (1840-)
  9. John King Osborne (1841-59)
  10. George Osborne (1843-1920)
  11. James Osborne (1845-)
  12. Francis Osborne (1847-)
  13. Anne Osborne (1852-)

After the death of her husband in 1858, Sarah moved to England. At the time of the 1861 census she was living with her daughter Annie at Regents Park in London.[3]

In the 1871 census she was listed with her son Hamilton and daughter Annie, and servants at 11 Clarendon Square Leamington in Warwickshire.[4]

Sarah Osborne died on 24 February 1874 at Lower Walmer. Deal, Kent, England. Probate on 18 March 1874 was proved by her son Hamilton Osborne Esq, of 14 Regent Street, Middlesex, one of the executors.[5]
