Biography

Jane Marshall was born in 1832 in Kirdford or Petworth, Sussex, England to Charles Marshall and Hannah (Jenkins) Marshall. She was christened in Kirdford on 13 May 1832.[1]

Jane's father passed away before 1841.

In 1841 Jane Marshall (age 9) lived at Shalford Common in Shalford, Surrey with her widowed mother Hannah (30-34) and two younger siblings: James (7) and Elizabeth (5).[2]

Jane's mother married James Ketcher in 1842.

In 1850 Jane had a daughter out of wedlock: Elizabeth Jane (Marshall) May (1850-)

In 1851 Jane Marshall (age 18) lived at Shalford Common in Shalford with her stepfather James Ketcher (35, Farm Lab), mother Hannah Ketcher (40), half-brother Henry Ketcher (6), brother James Marshall (16, Farm Lab), sister Elizabeth Marshall (14), daughter Elizabeth Marshall (0), as well as visitors David Covey (21, Farm Lab) and William Woolgar (22, Farm Lab).[3]

Jane Marshall married William Punchard on 4 Jan 1852 in Shalford.[4]

Jane and William had eight children: George Thomas Punchard (1852-1934), Charles Punchard (1855-), William C Punchard (1858-), Caroline Punchard (1862-), Frances Annie Punchard (1865-1866), Annie Punchard (1867-), Henry Edward Punchard (1870-1871), and John Allen Punchard (1872-).

[Yet to locate Jane on the 1861 census, possibly the name was transcribed incorrectly, but the family also moved around this time so it is difficult to know if they were still in Surrey or had moved to Berkshire]

In 1871 Jane Punchard (37, Dressmaker) lived in St Mary, Berkshire with three of her children: Charles (16, Labourer), Caroline (9), and Annie (4).[5] Her husband William (age 49, Labourer) also lived in St Mary as a lodger in the household of Thomas Earley (Beer Seller).[6] William is listed as "married," while Jane is "widowed" - however, these are definitely the right people.

Jane's husband William Punchard passed away in 1874.

In 1881 Jane Punchard (age 48, Tailoress) lived at Friar St in Reading St Lawrence, Berkshire with two of her children: Annie (14, Domestic Servant) and John (9, Scholar).[7]

In 1891 Jane Punchard (age 59, Charwoman) was a lodger at Norfolk Road in Islington, London along with her son John A (19, Stationer).[8]

She is most likely the Jane Punchard that passed away in 1894, aged 65 years.[9]
