Biography

John Marshall was likely born at Blackwatertown in the county of Armagh. He was the son of Joseph Marshall and Ann Huggins of Blackwatertown, parish of Clonfeacle, county Armagh.[1] On the 1st June 1773, John's father Joseph Marshall, of Blackwatertown, county Armagh, merchant, executed a deed with John Simpson of Ballyards, co. Armagh, merchant, second part; Thomas Simpson of Munnycuin [Moneyquin], co. Armagh, jun., and Thomas Simpson of Ballyards, merchant, third part; in anticipation of the intended marriage between John Marshall of Blackwatertown, merchant, and Jane Simpson, spinster, daughter of John Simpson.[2][3] John Marshall removed to Armagh late in life and appears to have died sometime between 1793–1802. One Armagh Diocesan Will index entry states, "John Marshall, Armagh, 1793;"[4] and in his compilation entitled, "Index to Prerogative Wills of Ireland, 1536–1810," Vickers included an entry for John Marshall of Armagh, 1802.[5] Thomas Knox Hannington, Esq., was the executor of Mr Marshall's will.[6]

Research notes

  • The year of death is estimated because there are two index entries for wills proved for a John Marshall of Armagh: the first was proved in 1793, and the second in 1802. It isn't certain whether Mr. Marshall died c.1793 or c.1802. He may have died in 1793, with the estate requiring that length of time to administer (which was not unusual). No reference was found to the death or burial of John Marshall in the Church of Ireland's registers for the parish of Armagh (for which there is a gap between 1775–1804)—which information might have resolved this research question.[7]~Kilpatrick-1128 Neither was a headstone found Mr Marshall (or his wife, Jane) during a tour of graveyards in the parish of Clonfeacle, and in the city of Armagh.~Kilpatrick-1128 (Autumn, 2017)
  • The Huggins and Marshall families of the parish of Aghaloo, county Tyrone, Ireland, have been researched to the early 1700s at the PRONI in Belfast and other archives; additional data input to this profile by A. Kilpatrick is pending.
