Biography

Hawise, daughter of William Marshal, Knt., Lord Marshal, and his wife Christian de Burgh,[1][2][3] was born about 1301 (15 in 1316).[4][5]
William Marshal's son and heir, John Marshal, died without issue on 12 August 1316; his heirs were his two sisters,[2][6] Denise and Hawise.[3]
Hawise married Robert de Morley before 20 October 1316.[4] Robert was the son of William de Morley, Knt., 1st Lord Morley, and his wife Cecily de Mohaut[7] of whom her father had become a guardian.[2][8]
Robert and Hawise had one son:[4][5]
Hawise (Marshal) de Morley died before 1329. Robert de Morley, Knt., 2nd Lord Morley, had three more children (two sons, Henry and Robert, and a daughter, Joan) by his second wife, Joan, whom he married by September 1334 and who died in December 1358.[2] Robert died in Burgandy on 23 March 1359/60.[4][5][2][9]

Land

"Hawyse... [was] heiress to her brother John Mareschall",[10] who died in August 1316. After her sister Denise died on 14 September 1316,[2] she inherited Denise's share of her brother's estates[3] and became de jure Lady Marshal. Hawise inherited from her siblings "the manors of Aldeby, Buxton, Hingham, and Hockering, Norfolk, Great Hallingbury, Essex, Hamerton, Huntingdonshire, Colton, Staffordshire, etc."[4][9]

Marshal of Ireland

The hereditary office of Marshal of Ireland had passed to Hawise in 1316.[2] The marriage of Robert de Morley and Hawise brought not only "the marshalship of Ireland" to the Morley family but also "all the inheritance of the Marshals".[8]
Robert, Marshal of Ireland in right of his first wife Hawise,[4] was succeeded by their son William de Morley, Knt., 3rd Lord Morley.[9]
