Biography

Anthony Marshal, recorded as a son of William, was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in November 1738 (day of month not in record).[1][2]

Anthony James Marshall was born in November 1738 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Mass., the second child of William and Elizabeth (Nason) Marshall. He belonged to the fifth generation of Marshalls in North America, a descendant of John Marshall who came to Massachusetts Bay Colony on the ship 'Hopewell' in 1635.

Anthony apparently served with the New England militia who fought under General Wolfe in the British capture of New France. His name appears on a return dated 9 April 1759 of men enlisted or impressed for service in Colonel Francis Brinley's Regiment for the invasion of Canada, age 20, resident of Walpole, Mass.

Along with his parents and several brothers, Anthony moved to Nova Scotia in the early 1760s, part of the wave of settlers known as the New England Planters. Based on land and children's birth records, he and his wife Rachael lived in the following places:

Granville Township, Annapolis County, early 1760s – 1785 Wilmot Township, Annapolis County, 1785 – 1790 Digby Township, (in what is now) Digby County, 1790 – death

The rural agricultural community where he last settled was subsequently named Marshalltown after him. Marshalltown is best known today as the home of the celebrated twentieth century folk artist Maud Lewis.

Anthony married (1) Rachael Morse, daughter of Josiah and Mary (Robbins) Morse on 3 December 1761 in Walpole, Norfolk Co., Mass. They had 8 children: Joseph (b. 1763), Abigail (b. 1765), Richard (b. 1768), Isaac (b. 1770), Rachel (b. 1771), Mary Polly (b. 1773), William (b. 1776) and Solomon (b. 1779). Rachael died on 12 May 1825.

Anthony married (2) Martha Inglis, widow of Thomas Bacon, on 25 July 1826 in Digby, Digby Co., N.S. She died in 1830. [3]

Anthony Marshall died on 1 April 1829, probably at Marshalltown, Digby Co., N.S.
