Biography

Born 27 April 1835 (or 1836, see note below) in Franklin County, Tennessee, Louisa Eliza MARSHALL was the daughter of William A. MARSHALL and Lucy Ann (Annie) (LIMBAUGH) MARSHALL. On 22 August 1854 in Franklin County, Tennessee, Louisa married Ezekiel Marion BEAN, by whom she became the mother of 15 children.

Ezekiel died in 1898, and Louisa inherited the 65-acre family farm in Moore County. In 1908 she applied to the state of Tennessee for a Confederate Widow's Pension, but her application was rejected. The application states that at that time she is "renting [the farm] out, it being very poor." In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, she is living in the home of her son Marion A. BEAN. She died 26 December 1928 at Lynchburg, Tenn. at the age of 92 (or possibly 93); the cause of death on the death certificate was influenza. The Nashville Tennessean newspaper noted that she had 190 living descendants at the time of her death. She is buried next to her husband at the Bean family cemetery in "Little Bean Hollow" near Marble Hill. She was a member of the Lutheran Church.

The children of Ezekiel Marion BEAN and Louisa Eliza (MARSHALL) BEAN were:

Notes

  • Louisa's birth year is either 1835 or 1836. The death certificate lists 1835 as her birth year; however, newspaper articles show her having an 80th birthday party in 1916, and a 90th birthday party in 1926, suggesting 1836. Census records also suggest 1836; her age is listed as 14 in the 1850 census.
