Biography

Reuben H. Marshall was the only son of John M. Marshall and Sarah Ferguson. He was born in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1861. Reuben lost his father as a small boy when John Marshall enlisted and served in Company C of the 45th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. John died of illness at the military hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky the 6th of April of 1864.

Reuben and his baby sister Frances were residing in the household of his widowed mother Sarah in Johnson County during the census of 1870. His mother removed with her two surviving children from the State of Kentucky to Pettis County, Missouri prior to the census of 1880.

Reuben resided with his mother in the household of his widowed grandmother, Nancy Ferguson, in the Town of Sedalia in Pettis County. At the age of 18 Reuben was working as a Fireman for the Rail Road. He was the only one of his four siblings who was still living by the census of 1900. His younger sister Frances E. (Marshall) Whitley had married, had a son, and died in Pettis County in 1886. Reuben was listed at age 39 in Bates County, Missouri. He had married 13 years earlier but no children were born into his household. His mother remained in Sedalia, Missouri and raised her grandson Charles E. Whitley, dying in 1914. Reuben died in Cass County, Missouri in 1916. His obituary stated he had succumbed to heart disease while pulling passenger train no. 202 on the Missouri Pacific Railway in Pleasant Hill, Missouri having been an employee of the Missouri Pacific since age 13. His widow Mrs. Frankie Marshall survived him. Reuben was buried in Kansas City, Missouri.

  • Fact: Residence (1861) Johnson, Kentucky, United States
  • 1870 Household of Sarah Marshall, Johnson Co., KY
  • 1880 Household of Nancy Ferguson, Pettis Co., Missouri

Note: Reuben is frequently mistaken as the man who married to Caroline Cole, a daughter of Dial Cole and Rebecca Fletcher. She was in fact first married to Jacob M. Marshall, a SON of Reuben Ansen Marshall and Catherine Holbrook.

Hi Bobby, This Reuben Marshall (per his birth date in dec'd father's widow's pension file) has been misidentified as marrying to Caroline Cole. I have sourced and separated the couple, placing Caroline Cole with the correct "Marshall" spouse (Jacob M. Marshall) who was actually the son of another Reuben Marshall killed during the Civil War.
