John Thomas Marshall was born in Market Weighton, Yorkshire, England. He attended school there but due to limited occupational choices started to train as a shoemaker like his father, John Marshall Sr. He was 15 when he came to the United States in 1872 with his parents and the rest of the family that had not already arrived in the United States. The family landed at New York and eventually settled in Weeping Water, Cass County, Nebraska.

John T. Marshall started out herding cattle to earn money, but in 1873 he started working for his father, John Marshall Sr. Then he went to work for Peter Merges a shoemaker from Plattsmouth, Nebraska. In 1876 John T. Marshall went into the shoe business with his father and they called their business partnership J. Marshall & Son. John Marshall Sr later sold his interest in the business to one of John T. Marshall's brothers, William Marshall. The business became Marshall Brothers.

John T. Marshall married Loretta Medella Smith on May 9, 1880 at Plattsmouth, Nebraska. The couple had 7 children. While living in Weeping Water, Nebraska he served 3 years as the town Trustee. In 1887 John Thomas Marshall sold his share of the business to his younger brother Arthur Ulysses Marshall. Once out of the shoe business, John Thomas Marshall bought 80 acres of land from his father John Marshall Sr and ran the farm until 1890. At that time he rented the farm out and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska hoping to provide better educations for his children.

The family moved to Panama, Nebraska in 1891. In Panama he and his brother, Hon. Charles Marshall, organized the Bank of Panama where John T. Marshall served as cashier. John T. Marshall and Charles Marshall, along with Roy Marshall and Ralph Marshall, organized the Bank of Cheney in 1910 where Charles Marshall served as President, John T. Marshall served as Vice President and Ralph Marshall served as Director.

John T. Marshall acquired several farms in Lancaster county, along with real estate in Otoe County and extensive property in Panama, Nebraska. He buildt his home in Panama in 1910.

In 1912 John T. Marshall ran for State Senator on the Republican ticket and took office in January 1913. He was reelected in 1914. He served as chairman of the Banks and Currency Committee, was a member of the Claims, County Boundaries, Insane Hospitals, Insurance, Privileges and Elections, Public Lands and Buildings, Appointments and Accounts and Exependiture Committees. He served on the Banks and Currency, Enrolled and Engrossed Bills, Medical Societies, and Revenue and Taxation Committees during his second term.

Loretta M Marshall passed away unexpectedly in Lincoln, Nebraska on April 17, 1915.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows - I. O. O. F., Prairie Lodge, No. 25 in Otoe County, Nebraska where he served as an officer. He organized the Panama Lodge and later helped merge the Douglas Lodge with the Panama Lodge. He was the First Noble Grand of the Panama Lodge and served as District Deputy several terms.

He was a Mason for many years helped organize Cubit Lodge, No. 237, where he became the Seond Master and his brother Charles Marshall was the First Master. He was also in the Lincoln Consistory, No. 2, A. & .V. S. R., Sesostris Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., at Lincoln, and was a charter member of Carnation Chapter, No. 160, O. F. S. He was also with Midland Lodge, No. 12, K. P., at Bennet, where he held minor offices.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church and served as and Elder and Superintendent of the Sunday school.
