Charles Edwin was born in Readfield, Maine, in 1836, the son of David and Mary Marston.[1] The family moved to Malden, Massachusetts, by 1855,[2] and by 1860 Charles was working there as a paper hanger, the same trade followed by his brother David.[3]
He enlisted to serve in the Civil War when he was 28 years old. He mustered in as a Private in Company F of the Massachusetts 19th Infantry on August 28, 1861. He was wounded during the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, but still managed to complete his 3-year term and was discharged on August 28, 1864.[4]
After the war, he returned to Malden, where he married Mary Hawkins, daughter of Alvah and Frances (Langmaid) Hawkins, in 1868.[5] They remained in Malden to raise a family. Charles was working as a dentist by 1880 - a dramatic career change from paper hanger![6]
Charles died in Malden in 1889. He was 53 years old.[7]
Charles E. Marston is part of the Malden Civil War veterans project.
