Joseph Alexis Martel was born on the 22nd of July 1781 in Baie-du-Febvre, Province de Québec, and was baptized the same day at the Saint-Antoine-de-la-Baie-du-Febvre parish church. He was the son of Michel Martel and M. Joseph Cailla. His godparents were Joseph Houle and Appoline Brousseau.

Alexis Martel married Marie Josephe Houle on the 23rd of November 1807 at the Saint-Antoine-de-la-Baie-du-Febvre parish church.

Alexis Martel's first wife, Josette Houle, died on the 29th of May 1811, at the age of 22.

Nine months later, on the 10th of February 1812, Alexis Martel remarried to Angelique Levêque. They were married at the Saint-Antoine-de-la-Baie-du-Febvre parish church.
