Alley Martin was born about 1785 in Virginia, and was married to George L Smith on Mar 21, 1812 in Wilson, Tennessee. Wilson, Tennessee was made from Smith, Tennessee, and was still early in it's statehood. Her spouse died in 1835, and so even though she is probably reflected as the 1 female 26-44 in the 1820 census taken for George L Martin in Wilson, Tennessee, it is only because he dies is how we are able to glean additional information as to who Alley was because she begin to be listed as the head of household beginning in early tax records for her.
She also appears in a curious court case in which Joseph Martin successfully appealed, identifying her as Ally Martin, not Smith, but said it about Feb 8 1812 in which if he correctly identified the date in which Ally Martin filed a case, then it was only a month until she wed George Smith. He identifies her, Joseph Stacey (who is the same man who likely also appears on her marriage bond) and James Wood as "heirs" to John Martin, and a certain Nancy Martin the mother of the heirs of said John Martin, deceased. This is kind of confusing language, but taking it one person at a time, we can see that Ally Martin is intimately connected with a John and Nancy who were married, and also connected with James Wood and Joseph Stacey. We know that James Wood appears to have married Sarah Martin, but it is less clear how Joseph Stacey fits in to this family. If we assume that this is Lindsay Martin's wife's father, then it still is confusing as to how he can be the heir apparent. More research needed.
Wrongly identified in trees as the daughter of Brigadier General Joseph Martin. This is likely due to a court case between a Joseph Martin asserting that the heirs of John Martin- James Wood, Joseph Stacy, and Alley Martin that he is not indebted to them and their claims are fradulent. This is very interesting and needs to be further researched as there was only a handful of Joseph Martin men on the frontier in 1812, but it is safe to assume that this cannot be the same Brigadier Gen. Joseph Martin who was deceased by 1808, was not the Joseph Martin who was appealling the Wilson, TN court's decision in 1812. Another easy assumption that this Martin family was connected to the Gen. Joseph Martin is that son William Lucas Martin was in nearby Smith County, as was daughter Susannah Burrus, in Dixon Springs, Smith County, and it is known that Joseph Martin himself was granted hundreds of thousands of acres to settle the western NC lands which became Tennessee, so it is easy to make that leap to "all Martin families in early Tennessee were descended or somehow connected to Joseph Martin"; but we can see that this particular person is probably not, at least as far as her father is concerned, which more likely was John Martin.
Census records list her as Ally or Alley; "Alexandra" or "Alice" was probably not her name.
According to census records, Alexandra "Ally" Martin was born about 1785 in Virginia. She was named in the deed where John Martin signed his land and slaves over to a number of his children - see Martin-26416. Ally was named in a lawsuit in Wilson County, TN in February of 1812 - Joseph Martin vs James Woods, Joseph Stacy, & Ally Martin[1], heirs of John Martin dec'd and Nancy his wife.
Ally married George Smith[2] in 1812 in Wilson County, TN. Joseph Stacy was listed as the bondsman.
George may have died before 1840, as Ally would appear to be the female aged 50-60 living in the household of her son Thomas Gans Smith in Benton County, MO [3]. She lived with Thomas in 1850. The census taken wrote that she was a male[4]. In 1860 they had moved to St Clair County and Alla Smith age 75 born in Virginia was again the household of her son Thomas[5]. This time she was correctly identified as a femal. She must have died before 1870, as she disappeared from the census records.
Ally and George had children Thomas Gans, Dolly JG, Lucy Allen, and Nancy Jasper.
