Biography

Origin

The birth of John Martin on 2 OCT 1725 is recorded in the records of Christ Church in Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel County. He was the son of John Martin & Liddia Hanks. [1] He was the fourth of this line and this name living in Maryland and went by the name John Martin, Jr. in most records. Since no record of the death of his father has been found, he may be confused with him at times.

Evidence

On 2 AUG 1751 John Martin, Jr. registered a stray horse at his property among the Frederick County land records as required by law.[2] He was still calling himself John Martin, Jr. on 8 APR 1753 when he found another stray, [3] and he was still living near his father, as there is also a stray recorded the same year by John Martin, Senior.[4]

Marriage & Family

No church record of the marriage of John Martin and Lois Shipley has been found, but their marriage is proved by a probate record. When her father, Robert Shipley died in 1763, close kin were required to sign the inventory of the estate. John & Lois Martin signed as the kin of Robert Shipley. [5]

Patents

On 8 MAR 1742 John Martin, Sr. surveyed a tract of land in Frederick County (at the time it was in Prince George's County) named Johnson's Chance he presumably named after his eldest son. This 100 acre tract was located at the head of a small branch that runs into Linganore Creek about 300 perches above Mr. Edward Beatty's land called Poplar Bottom. The patent was assigned on 14 AUG 1749 to his son, John Martin Jr. for a price of £3.[6]

John Martin, Jr. applied for a patent on a 100 acre tract in Anne Arundel County 31 DEC 1754. The 100 acre tract he named Neglect was located at the head of a draft on the south side of the Patapsco Falls. [7] Patapsco Falls was the dividing line between Baltimore and Anne Arundel County at this time, but the patent is in Howard County today about 30 miles east of the Frederick area where he lived previously.

Shortly after this, on 21 MAY 1755 John Jr. registered a survey of unclaimed land found adjacent to his Johnson's Chance property. The resurvey discovered 1,358 acres of unclaimed land, but Martin did not go through with the complete process to patent and claim the extra land. He assigned the right to patent to Thomas Beatty[8] By assigning the rights to the warrant, John Martin was selling his original 100 acre tract plus the new unclaimed land surrounding it.

As John Martin Jr., he surveyed land in Anne Arundel County and registered the survey 6 JUL 1762 for a 420 acre tract he named Brothers Agreement. This tract included the tract Neglect and 320 acres of unclaimed adjacent land. The description of the property mentions a wagon road running through the property. Brothers Agreement did not go through the whole patent process either.[9]

The original 100 tract of Neglect was sold by John Martin, planter of Anne Arundel County, on 2 OCT 1764 to Jane Ayton of Baltimore County for £25. The deed was signed by John Martin, Jr. and his wife Lois Martin signed to release her dower rights in the property.[10] The deed following this deed is the conveyance of Brothers Agreement from George Shipley to Jane Ayton for £75 and containing 327 acres. This land is the same as the unpatented land mentioned above that must have been patented by John Martin's brother-in-law, George Shipley and his wife Catherine. One wonders if Jane Ayton is a relative of one or both of the brothers-in-law (see the will of Henry Ayton.)[11]

No more evidence of John Martin, Jr. in Maryland has been found after this property sale. Did he move to another state?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Martin-73008 and Martin-20800 appear to represent the same person because: The profile of Martin-73008 is confusing that John Martin with his father of the same name.

Seely you have info about land 'called Johnsons Chance patented by John Martin Sr in 1742 & later sold to John Jr in 1749'. On March 11, 1752 John Martin Jr farmer of Frederick Co sold the land to Ed Dorsey for 20 pounds.

You state 'on 21 MAY 1755 John Jr. registered a survey of unclaimed land found adjacent to his Johnson's Chance property'. This John Jr is referred to as John Jr of Frederick Co whereas my John Jr on July 23, 1754 was called John Jr of BALTIMORE CO when he had land surveyed called The Neglect. Clearly they are 2 different John Jr!

There's confusion about the different John Martins as there were alot of them & Seely didn't put some of them together where they belong. The facts about MY gr. grandfather married to Lois Shipley.

He was born to a John Martin Sr. as he's mentioned as John Martin Jr of BALTIMORE CO (& not Frederick Co) when on July 23, 1754 he had 100 acres of land called The Neglect (now in Howard Co) survyed by Robert Shipley-his future Uncle in law.

In 1761 John Martin Jr had 420 acres called Brother's Agreement. In 1762 he had it surveyed. However the unpatented certificate went to George Shipley. It was in AA Co & now in Howard Co. Seely says it was later sold to Jane Ayton whose daughter Jane was married to Richard Shipley (cousin to Lois Shipley-John Martin's wife). Richard was the son of Adam Shipley & Ruth Whipps.

(There's a John Martin in the 1773 Tax List of Delaware Hundred in Baltimore Co. Is this him, his dad or someone else?)

(In the 1783 Tax List of Anne Arundel there's a John Martin of Annapolis Hundred. Is this him, his dad or someone else?)

On April 1, 1785 John bought land in Loudoun Co VA. 'George William Fairfax to John Martin, 102 acres to John Martin, his heirs and assigns for and during the natural lives of Joshua Martin, John Martin, and Robert Shipley Martin, his sons.' This info came from my cousin.

John died in 1808 in Loudoun Co VA where I found online a portion of his inventory 'John Martin, Sr estate account inventory, June 25, 1808, Loudoun County, VA, for land sold by John Martin to James McHenry, dec'd'.

John & Lois had 3 sons as far as I know-Joshua, John Jr & my gr. grandfather Robert Shipley Martin. If John Martin married to Lydia Hanks were his parents as I always thought they were, Lydia Hanks brother William & his wife Ruth Ryan moved to Loudoun Co VA about 1764. I thought maybe the reason John & Lois moved to Loudoun Co was because his Uncle William Hanks family lived there.

I haven't worked on this family for about 10 years. It is a challenge since the name is so common. If you have sources of different information please post them on the matching person and maybe we can sort them all out. Your comment about the name of Damaris makes sense and I also have doubts about a second marriage.
