Biography
I was born in the United States and spent my early years growing up in Bellingham, Washington. After graduating from Mount Rainer High School, I studied at the University of Puget Sound, in Tacoma, Washington, earning a B.A. with honors in International Political Economy, with minors in Biology and Economics. In high school, I came to know the McQuinns and the bond that we formed endures.
After my undergraduate studies, I worked for a time with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) European Union Program, where I had lived previously, in Freiburg, Germany. In Germany, I forged lasting friendships before pursuing further studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. Although originally attracted to CU Boulder for a PhD program in Economics, I eventually shifted course and graduated with a J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law in 2007.
After law school, I worked for the law firm Patton Boggs LLP (and later for Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP) in Denver, Colorado. While in Denver, I served on the boards for the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame and Gateway Battered Women’s Services (which later became Gateway Domestic Violence Services). I also served as a volunteer with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law Election Protection program and guardian ad litem for the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center’s Domestic Violence Program in Denver County court.
While in Colorado, I met (and several years later married) TJ, a Federal Indian Law attorney. In 2014, TJ and I relocated to Northern New Mexico to be close to family at San Ildefonso Pueblo and in Santa Fe. Once we decided that we would make New Mexico our home while our family was young, I went to work for a short time with the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer. In 2016, I took a position as an attorney with the Office of General Counsel for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where I serve as the Associate General Counsel for Environment, Safety, and Health.
In my early years at the Laboratory, I earned an M.B.A. from the University of New Mexico Anderson School of Management. While in New Mexico, I've worked to help establish the Pueblo Education Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting higher education for the Pueblo of San Ildefonso and its community, serving as an outside Director and Treasurer. I am a passionate advocate for Native student education, and support the Native American Parent Advisory Council for Los Alamos Public Schools. I am also (still) working to bring the Highline Advanced Math Program, developed by Don and Jerre McQuinn, to Northern New Mexico and I regularly volunteer in the Los Alamos public schools. In addition, I am a member of the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Professional Surveyors, and have served as Vice-Chair for the Board and Vice-Chair of the Professional Surveyors Committee.
Life is busy and full, and I am not on WT as consistently or frequently as would be fun if I had unlimited time. I enjoy contributing when and where I can.
Fun With Cousins and Other Relationships
Fun with Cousins is exactly that — a FUN and lighthearted exercise. When my children ask ("Are we related to X?” or “Who is the oldest great-grandparent?”), I can hop on to WT to check a connection (based on the state of the single family tree at that time). Sometimes, I will also add a note here.
Although I do only add those where a direct connection is found, my personal philosophy is that the truth of our connection to our longer-ago ancestors (except for with certain, large-volume specialized y-DNA and mt-DNA studies) is indiscernible. What we think we know, even when we have the “Best Evidence,” is an incomplete picture. What may be true legally after so many generations is quite unlikely to be true genetically. For instance, some FwC connections may be through my legal great-grandfather, Joseph Cram.
This reality aside, Fun with Cousins is a great way to make history come alive! For example, as we were visiting the National Museum of Scotland and viewing the original Declaration of Arbroath, a few clicks in WT allowed me to explain that 25 of our ancestors had signed it. This made the encased document we were staring at slightly more interesting! Similar trick for the copy of the Magna Carta from 1300 that we saw at Westminster Abbey. One day they’ll appreciate these things for what they are, but piquing interest now is great.

DNA Results
Until early 2023, all great-grandparent branches of Maxine's family tree were confirmed by DNA testing, except for the line through Maxine's great-grandfather Joseph "Joe" Cram. While Joe Cram was Clifford "Cliff" Cram's legal father, it does not appear that he was Cliff's biological father. Instead, Cliff Cram's biological father appears to be Everett Goakey. As of 2023, and probably prior, the WikiTree community has decided that the tree will be a genetic tree to the extent possible and so the genetic paternal relationship is followed in this instance.
WikiTree Business
Be Quite Bold in Editing Profiles
Please Be Quite Bold in revising any WikiTree profiles where I am listed as a Profile Manager that are over 100 years old. And, please be fairly bold with those less than 100 years old where it’s clear that key relationships are missing where supported by good evidence. An example of this may be where parents and one child are listed, but census data show other children listed. Asking before doing is nice but can slow down our collective progress and, while I may be a steward for a specific profile, it belongs to us all including you.
If there is a profile with a particular challenge in the narrative — for example, secondary sources and other online trees have gotten it wrong despite clear primary evidence — then I endeavor to add a research note and a request not to change certain key relationships. Unless there is clear intentional abuse, my view is that adding extra protection to a profile is not consistent with a wiki-based approach or the message that folks should jump in and contribute without fear that they are making a mistake.
Not every relationship that is likely true is fully documented or knowable and even the Best Evidence can lead to overconfidence and erroneous conclusions. There is a degree of uncertainty in everything we do, even if it is only about genetic pathways versus legal pathways in relationship lines.
There will be no objection from me if someone adds a relationship on one of my managed profiles that is uncertain. As long as there is some support and logical basis, and your work is consistent with WikiTree guidelines, you will not get a demand from me about whether a child or parent proven in such circumstances. This does not mean I am apathetic or uncaring, but I am too busy to be a micromanager and so encourage reliance on the greater WikiTree community. In any circumstances like this, just indicate that the relationship is uncertain and explain the situation in the narrative. All of this said, consistent with WikiTree expectations, please do not delete relationships on my managed profiles without discussion and only add highly speculative relationships in the narrative section.
An Open Note of Apology to the Arborists
I'm sorry.
For a period of time, I was a WikiTreer who would recycle unsourced and unconnected profiles that had resulted from early GEDCOM imports — I even did it with my own profile at one point. It seemed far more efficient, and even rather helpful, to use a profile that had been created and merge it into another person we know actually existed rather than allow them to exist as relics. Before I did this, I did search and read about the practice and did not encounter the clear guidelines that now exist.
In doing it, I did not appreciate that I may have been creating significant issues. To the extent that I created any damage to the larger tree in these activities, I am incredibly sorry. The work that everyone does to maintain a healthy tree is so important and I would never intentionally undermine any of those efforts.
