Biography

  • An Obituary in Singleton Argus dated 1st April, 1932 reads:
  • DEATH OF MR THOMAS MARTIN.
  • Mr Thomas Martin, of Redbournberry, died at his home yesterday morning, after an illness of about six weeks.
  • The deceased, who was 67 years of age, was born at Glendonbrook, and lived in the district all his life. He was a grazier, and one of the best known men in stock circles in the State. As calf buyers in past days, the names of Tom and Harry Martin were a by-word in this district. In quest of calves they would travel by buggy or sulky to areas as far away as Putty, selling their purchases in Sydney. They operated in Singleton with big herds of cattle, and owing to the business built up with calves is deo the opening of the first union markets in Singleton. It is fitting that his two sons-in-law should be carrying on as auctioneers in this class of business, which the late Mr Martin did so much to establish. Deceased is survived by Mrs Martin, two sons and five daughters, viz., Messrs Arthur (Sedgefield) and Milton (Newcastle), .Mesdames Gordon Bailey and Les. Bailey (Redbournberry), Mort. Anderson iSingleton), A. G. Bolton (Richmond), and Miss Marion Martin (Redbournberry). The funeral, which was a very large one, took place this morning, after a service in All Saints' Church, the remains being interred in the Church of England cemetery at Whittingham. Mr H. Roberts had charge of the funeral arrangements.
