Marie Louise Martin was born on February 22 1860 at 15, rue du Pont Neuf Alençon, Orne, France. She was the first child of Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin . Marie was baptised at St. Pierre de Montsort, Alençon on February 23, 1860, the day after her birth. Marie’s Godmother was her paternal grandmother Fanie Boureau and her Godfather was her maternal grandfather Isidore Guérin. Marie attended the Visitation school at Le Mans with her sister Pauline. When she left school she helped her mother at home and taught her younger sisters, especially Céline. Her mother taught her how to keep house so that when she died Marie would be able to take over from her. She cared for her mother when she was dying. Marie was 17, when her mother died. The family moved to Lisieux three months later and Marie organised everything in their new home. She always remained very close to her father, who called her his 'Diamond'. Marie always had a very independent nature and as a young girl she felt no attraction to marriage or to religious life, but she eventually discerned a religious vocation with the help of the Jesuit priest Fr, Almire Pichon. She entered the Carmel of Lisieux on October 15, 1886 and received the name Sr. Marie of the Sacred Heart. She was procurator for many years. As she got older Marie suffered from severe rhumatism. She died on January 19, 1940 at the age of 79.
