The Mudgee Guardian and North-West Representative (NSW) Thu 4 Mar 1954, Page 10 MR. E. J. MARTIN The oldest identity of the Gulgong district, Mr. Edward John Martin, died in the Gulgong District Hospital recently. He had reached the great age of 99 years. Born at Richmond, the late Mr. Martin had lived in the Gulgong district practically all his life, having spent 39 years in the employ of Cobbora station which was for many years owned by Moxham brothers. The other part of his active life was lived at Sandy Creek. A man of integrity, the late Mr. Martin was held in the greatest esteem by everyone who had the good fortune to know him. He played a big part in blazing the trail for the future advancement of the district, and was renowned for his conscientiousness, genuineness and his sense of human understanding. When he first took up employment on the land, many properties had shingle hut yards and sheep were shepherded in the day time and brought back at night. There were very few fences, and dingoes were troublesome. Mr. Martin had always enjoyed good health until just prior to his admission to hospital (where he was a patient for almost 18 months). For some seven years he had resided with his son, Mr. Ivo. Martin. Deceased is survived by the following sons: Ivo (Gulgong), Bert (Sydney), Kenneth (Baradine), Amos (Brisbane, Q), and Cecil (New Zealand). The funeral took place to the Church of England portion of the Gulgong cemetery, Rev. Canon Powell (Mudgee) officiating in the absence of Rev. S. Carr, of Gulgong. Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll, of Mudgee and Gulgong, were in charge of the arrangements. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones.
