George was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 2nd July 1860. He was the son of William Martin and Margaret Gray. [1]
In 1861 George was 9 months old. He lived at 8, Albert Street in a parish designated 'Glasgow Inner High' but better known as St Rollox, with his parents, sister Helen and two boarders, Agnes and Isabella Patton. [2]
In 1871 George was 11 years old. He lived at 54 St Mungo Street, in Glasgow Inner High with his father, siblings Helen, Thomas, Agnes, William and Robert. Also present was Grace Gray, her mother's youngest sister. Margaret herself is missing from this record. [3]
In 1881 George was 20 years old and employed as an iron turner. He lived with his parents and siblings, Helen, Thomas, Agnes, William, John, Robert, Margaret, James and Allan at 54 St Mungo Street in the parish of St Rollox. [4]
On 2nd August 1882 George married Annie Maria Dobson in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim, Ireland. [5]
In 1901 George was 40 years old and employed as a dock labourer. He lived with his wife Annie and children Ellen, Annie, William, George, Margaret and Agnes at 39 McLean Street in Govan, Glasgow. [6]
In 1911 George was 50 years old and employed as a dock labourer. He lived at 39 McLean Street Govan with his wife Annie and children William, George, Margaret and Agnes.[7]
On 28th May 1915, Annie died in Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. [8]
On 30th March 1916 George married his second wife, a widow named Mary Southwell, daughter of Thomas Flood, ship's captain and Annie Docherty, both deceased. They were married by declaration at 67 Oswald Street, Govan, witnessed by George's daughter Margaret and her husband, Robert Thomson, fitter under a warrant issued by the Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire dated 30 March 1916. [9]
In 1921 George was 60 years old and employed as a casual dock labourer. He lived at 39 McLean Street Govan (Plantation) with his wife Mary, (58). The record notes that her place of birth was Sligo, Ireland. [10]
George died in Springburn, Glasgow on 31st July 1935. His daughter, Margaret Thomson registered his death. [11]
