Biography

Locations of birth of the children suggest that Samuel and his wife started moving between Woodbury CT, where Martins had lived for some time and Hurds were a founding family, and Lanesborough in the Berkshires around 1748. The status of Samuel as 'captain' is not clear - did this have to do with service in the French & Indian War, the Revolution or simply some local militia? It is also not known how he supported himself and his family, though homesteading and trading were the usual activities of people of his kind in these colonial days. Some discrepancies were initially apparent in what was offered about Samuel's children further below, perhaps owing to a merging/confusion of Samuel's identity with that of his father, also called Samuel. But on 12 ii 24, I received a message from Daniel Lewis (Lewis-11969), who suggested "most of these errors are mine from a long time ago" and went on to say: "This is what I have for children from the History of Ancient Woodbury, William Cothern. Bronson Bros Publisher, Waterbury, CT 1854. (Bapt. for all except William).

William, b. 1744 in Woodbury (I have found no official record of this yet); Reuben, bapt. June 22, 1746 in Woodbury Esther, bapt. June 12, 1748 in Woodbury (died young) Annis bapt. May 20, 1750 in Woodbury Wait, bapt. July 5, 1752 in Woodbury Solomon bapt. July 28, 1754 in Woodbury (died young) Zadok, bapt.Octrober 3, 1756 in Woodbury (died young) Samuel, bapt. Aug 6, 1758 in Woodbury (died young)

Also I have Ann Hurd, not Annis, and I don't now trust the death date. He [Samuel] was the very first settler of Lisbon, NH about 1768."
