James Martin was born on 26 July 1855 in Billie Mains, Preston,Berwickshire. He had three daughters to his first wife Margaret (Blackie) Martin before she died three weeks after the birth of their third daughter Annie. He then remarried Elizabeth (Aikman) Martin in February 1885 and had a son James in the September of that year. Daughter Elizabeth was born April 1895 and on the 25th of May 1897 they had twins Margaret and John born ten minutes apart at 25 Watson Cresent, Edinburgh. He died on 19 July 1914 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, at the age of 58.
