John Martin was born in Sussex, the son of Thomas Martin and Sarah Constable, being christened at Horsted Keynes on 26 Dec 1795.[1]
He was condemned to death for sheep stealing in March 1818 but was sentenced to be transported for life instead, traveling aboard the "General Stuart" and arriving at Sydney Cove, New South Wales on 31st December 1818. John was described as 5 ft 8"and a quarter inches tall with a fair ruddy complexion, black hair and hazel eyes. On his arrival at New South wales, he was assigned to G. J. Marshall at Mowbray on 19th December 1823[2].
He was granted a conditional pardon for good behaviour on 1st January 1842 and was employed by Middleton of Glenrose.
He married Jemima Rayner in 1823 in New South Wales, Australia [3] and they were the parents of Emma Sophia Martin, John Thomas Martin, Sarah Eliza Martin, Jane Martin, Eliza Martin, Edwin John Martin, John Thomas Martin, George Gostwyck Martin, Eve Martin, Charles William Martin and Jemima Martin.
John died on 28 March 1848 in New South Wales, Australia and is buried in the in churchyard of Anglican Church, Paterson, New South Wales, Australia.
