Thomas was born in 1789. He passed away in 1839.

Thomas was a son of Pleasant Martin and Rebecca Joplin, of Albemarle county, Virginia. Thomas married Mary Brisco Boyd Bryan, and they had at least seven children. A genealogical study published in the Times Dispatch of Richmond, Virginia in 1912 notes the children as being: John (living in Nashville, Tennessee in 1912), Rebecca, Charles (had married Cornelia Childress and lived in Nashville, Tennessee at the time), Pleasant, Ferdinand (also known as Thomas Ferdinand), Frederick, and Elizabeth.
