Cordelia (Delie) Martin was the second child of Samuel and Emily Martin and was born at Burrell Creek in 1884.
She married James Thiele, a mail carter, on 20th December, 1905, and they moved from the Manning to Kiama on the South Coast of New South Wales, during their first year of marriage. Their two eldest children, Faith and Stanley, were born at Kiama and their third child, Wynne, was born several years after the family's return to Wingham.
James Thiele, Delie's husband, was killed during the First World War, and she was left to raise their three children by herself. The Wingham Branch of the Returned Soldiers League, with the voluntary assistance of the local community, built a two bedroom house in Richardson Street, Wingham, at a cost that Delie could repay from her War Widows pension. This house was named "Volwing", and Delie lived there until about 1950 when she went to live with her son at Tuncurry.
During her widowed years at Wingham, Delie was a very busy person, rearing her three children, working as a midwife as well as doing voluntary work for the Methodist Church and the Red Cross. She was also well-known throughout the district for the many Christmas puddings that she made and gave to her friends.
Delie was a very devoted Christian and a mile's walk to and from her Church did not deter from attending each Sunday, as well as the weekly Fellowship meetings.
There's no doubt that her faith helped her through a very sad life which included the loss of her husband in the Great War, the death of her eldest daughter in 1944, leaving her son-in-law, Frank Beattie with three young daughters aged two to nine years to rear. The marriage of her son failed, leaving him with two small children and her granddaughter, Patty, died tragically, aged only fifteen years. Then, in 1956, occurred the devastating death of her youngest daughter, Wynne, leaving son-in-law, Bill Lambert with five boys aged five to fifteen years.
Delie died in 1960 aged seventy-six and is buried in Bo Bo Creek Cemetery.
