Charles was born in 1860.  His father is not recorded on the birth certificate so his father is unknown but he uses the name Martin for the rest of his life - he was adopted or was just born before parents wed?

OBITUARY. TEMUKA LEADER, ISSUE 10727, 9 DECEMBER 1924 CHARLES ALEXANDER MARTIN. There passed away at his late residence, Shaw street, Temuka, on Sunday morning, Mr Charles Alexander Martin, a well-known figure in Temuka for over forty years. Early on Wednesday morning he was seized with a sudden illness while working in his garden, and he never regained consciousness. The late Mr Martin was born in Christchurch in 1860. He was educated in Christchurch and came to Temuka in 1879. He married Miss Sarah King, and they removed to Geraldine, but returned and took up their residence in Temuka, Mr Martin carrying on business as a carrier. In 1918 he had a serious accident, being badly mauled in a chaff cutter, and in 1920 he started as a taxi proprietor, which he carried on until his death. Two sons served in the Great War, one dying at sea before reaching New Zealand. Mr Martin is survived by a widow and eight sons and six daughters. The funeral will take place in the Temuka cemetery this afternoon.
