Biography

Rev. Robert Martin died Monday morning at 9:45, 25th instant, near Rocky Mount, after an illness of three weeks; aged 84 years, 11 months and 25 days. Mr. Martin was born in South Carolina December 29, 1814. His parents moved to Georgia when he was a child, where he was raised.

In 1839 he was married to Miss Indiana Dillard, and was ordained to Baptist ministry in 1840. In 1852 he moved to Louisiana, and settled six miles from Rocky Mount, where he lived until 1886, when he moved to Fisher county, Texas, residing there six years, when he returned to his old home in Louisiana, where he remained to his death.

Deceased raised nine children, seven of whom are living. B.F. and C.C. Martin are dead. Mrs. T.J. Martin and Mrs. Tena Bryan are living in Texas. His wife and daughters and sons -- Mrs. Eugenia Evans, Mrs. Anna Whittington, and Dr. R.B., W.C. and A.B. Martin, are living in this parish, and were present at his death; also, his sister, Mrs. Easter Houston.

Full of years and honors Rev. Robert Martin was on Christmas morning gathered to his fathers. He was a man of positive force of character, and ever exerted that force for the cause of his God, and his country and his people. He was one who [sent] luster to the citizenship of his country and inspired those who came in contact with him to greater effort in the struggle to reach higher ideals.

The loss of this Christian gentleman will be felt by many. His old friends will be reminded that "To the past go more dead faces, Every year," and that they are merely waiting on the shore of the vast, unchartered sea, out upon which they, too, must soon set sail, to be lost from view in its mystic murmurings.
