Cyrus Newton Martin was born 22 June 1857 in Macoupin, Illinois, one of the eleven children of John L. Martin and Eliza J. Davis. Cyrus married Emma Elizabeth S. Coffin (born 1860).[1]
In 1860, the Martin family lived in Scott, Illinois. The household included John Martin, 48, born in Ohio, a farmer, with $800 in real estate and $610 in personal estate; his wife, Eliza J., 37, born in Virginia; their children, all born in Illinois, Joel U., 21, farm laborer; Wilbur F., 16; Lucinda B., 14; William, 13; Susan J., 12; Mary E., 9; John O., 7; Cyrus, 4; Harriet, 2; and Thomas, 1. All but the youngest three children were in school.[2]
In 1870, the Martin family lived in Scott Township, Illinois. The household included John Martin, 57, born in Ohio, a potter, with$1200 in real estate and $200 in personal estate; his wife, Eliza, 46, born in Virginia, who works in a pottery shop; their children, all born in Illinois, Wilbur, 26, works in a pottery shop; John, 18, in school; Cyrus, 14, in school; Fletcher, 12, in school; Susan, 22; Ellen, 20; Emma, 15, in school; and Belle, 8, in school.[3]
In 1880, he was 28 and living with his parents and a sister in Mt. Zion, Macon County, Illinois. The household included John L. Martin, 66, a farmer, born in Ohio, whose father was born in Missouri and whose mother was born in Pennsylvania; his wife Eliza J., 58, born in Virginia, as were her parents; and their children: Syuis (Cyrus), 28, a laborer, born in Illinois; and Belle, 18, a student, born in Illinois.
