Biography

Jackson was born sometime in the period 1828-1832 probably in an area of Logan/Fayette County, Virginia, that later became the Richmond District of Raleigh County, West Virginia. He moved later to an area near the present-day Fayette-Raleigh County line that remained part of Fayette County called the "Garden Ground".

He married Margaret Lue Ford in 1855 with whom he had at least 7 children. She evidently died sometime in the 1880s.

He remarried in 1890 to Martha Williams who was about 30 years younger. They had four children that survived. Evidence indicates that they had two others that probably did not survive.

He passed away about 1918.

Research Notes

  1. Birth. Records for Jackson Martin give varying data concerning his actual birthdate.
    1. The 1850 Census gives his age as 22 which would he put his birth year as 1827 or 1828.
    2. The record for his marriage to Margaret Lue Ford in 1855 gives his age as 23 which would put his birth year as 1831 or 1832.
    3. The 1860 Census gives his age as 30 which would put his birth year as 1829 or 1830.
    4. The 1870 Census gives his age as 37 which would translate to a birth year of 1832 or 1833.
    5. The 1880 Census gives his age as 48 which would translate to a birth year of 1831 or 1832.
    6. The record of his marriage to Martha Williams in 1890 gives his age as 55 which would put his birth year at 1834 or 1835.
    7. The 1900 Census does not have an entry for him or his family.
    8. The 1910 Census gives his age as 78 which would give him a birth year of 1831 or 1832.
    9. No death record has surfaced for him.
    10. The various ages in these records show that he was born anywhere from 1827 to 1833 with most calculations centered around the year 1832. In the absence of definitive documentation, I have shown that his birth date was after 1828. If he was born in period 1828-1831, he would have had a birthplace of Logan County; if during or after 1831, he would have had a birthplace of Fayette County. Since his birthdate is most likely 1831 or 1832 based on above evidence, I gave him a birthplace of Fayette County.
  2. Marriage.
    1. An interesting story remains unknown. How did widower Jackson Martin meet and marry Martha Williams, a woman at least 29 years younger and who lived at least 10 miles away?
  3. Death and Gravesite.
    1. GEDCOM data in his FamilySearch.org profile gives a death date of 5 March 1918 but does not cite a source for this date. He is listed in the 1910 Census and is not found in the 1920 Census, so it seems certain that he died in that period.
    2. By family memory, Jackson lived in the area called "Garden Ground" near the Fayette/Raleigh County line near the New River. According to Raleigh County Cemeteries, he was buried there in a grave that is now unmarked alongside his younger brother, Mike. The area is now closed off and the gravesites might not be easily findable.
