Biography

According to her death record, Emma was born about 7 August 1889. The actual date is unknown as there is no birth record and her age varies from record to record. She was the daughter of Jackson Martin and Martha Williams. She passed away in 1967.

Research Notes

  1. Birth Date. The records that give Emma's age vary somewhat.
    1. The 1910 Census gives an age of 19 which would mean she was born in 1890 or 1891.
    2. Her marriage record in 1912 gives an age of 22 which would mean she was born in 1889 or 1890.
    3. The 1930 Census gives an age of 38 which would mean she was born in 1891 or 1892.
    4. The 1940 Census gives an age of 41 which would mean she was born in 1898 or 1899 (and is obviously wrong).
    5. Her death certificate, SSDI, and FAG all give a date of 7 August 1889 for her birth. While all of these sources could be incorrect, they do match or are consistent with most of her records.
  2. Birth Place. Emma's marriage record gives a birthplace of "Thurmond Mtn." and her FAG record gives a birthplace of "Thurmond", but the location was likely "Garden Ground" where her father and mother lived at the time--not too far away from Thurmond. For now, leaving the location as just "Fayette County".
