The following may shed some light or raise questions regarding the lineage of John Martin, of Bridgetown, Pomeroy. This information comes from a Wiki article about Capt. John Martin (c. 1560 – 1632) a Councilman of the Jamestown Colony in 1607. The article addresses the question of who the father of Capt John Martin is stating that in the book "The Visitation of Devon " in 1620 by Sir Henry St.George, we find a collection of family trees written by the actual families in question collected and compiled in the year 1620. On page 180, you will find the tree for the Martyn family written by a son of Captain John Martin and Jackametha de Browne also by the name John "Jo"(not to be confused with the son named John who died in Virginia). He notes that the father of Captain John Martin was John Martin of Bridgetown Pomeroy and states that the origin of the family line begins with Richard Martin of Poulehurst in Kent. [2]
Additionally, a pedigree chart[3] found at ancestry.com provides more information as follows:
John Martin son of John Martyn of Bridgetown Pomeroy and Unknown, was born about 1546 in ENGLAND and died in 1627 about age 81.

It would seem doubtful that Sir William Martyn, born about 1446 in Dorset, England is the father of John Martyn of Bridgetown Pomeroy (John James Martin, of this profile). This is based on several things, 1st, Sir William Martyn would have been about 70 years old at the time John Martyn was born, 2nd, the family tree given above indicates the father of John Martyn, is John Martyn of Tarmorn Co Devon, England, 3rd, there has been no evidence found to indicate Sir William Martyn married a Jane Clevedon. William's mother however, was Margaret De Clevedon. Perhaps this caused some confusion.
Note: In the user generated family tree listed here below as an example, the father of Sir William, Thomas Martyn is married to a Jane Clevedon instead of Margaret Clevedon. Jane Clevedon is indicated as being the dau of Sir John Clevedon, obviously confusing the two. Jane Clevedon is indicated as being the mother of Sir William. The source of this tree is another user generated family group sheet located at Ancestry.com See: Jane Clevedon 1435 - 1464 Also see: Jane Clevedon Again, in this user tree, Jane Clevedon 1435-1464 has been confused with Margeret Clevedon 1435-1464. It is clear that Jane Clevedon and Margaret Clevedon are the same person.
Most sources indicate William was married twice, 1st to Isabelle Farrington, they had two children, and 2ndly, to Christiana Paulet, they had three children, the last being born in 1504. This last child is born to William and Isabelle four years after William is indicated as being married to Jane Clevedon in 1500. Obviously, this can not be correct if William was still married to Chrisiana. Also, William died in 1504, which would be 12 years before John was born. And although sources do indicate that Sir William had a son named John, he was born to William and Christian Pawlet about 1503 about a year before his father died. Therefore, it is not possible that the John James Martyn of this profile is the son of Sir William Martyn.
The Wikipedia article on John Martin (Jamestown), seems to support this conclusion since it names Richard Martyn of Poulehurst as the family progenitor of his line. This Richard Martyn is indicated as being the grandfather of Sir William Martyn. Sir William Martyn's father is Sir Thomas Martyn, son of Sir Richard Martyn, VI Baron of Athelhampton. [4] Sir William and John Martyn may both be related to Richard Martyn of Poulehurst, however Sir William is almost certainly not the father of John Martyn. The relationship between William Martyn and John should be considered uncertain and undetermined. Richard Martyn of Poulehurst and Richard Martyn , Baron of Athelhampton may be two different persons. Genealogical sources, both secondary and primary may contain errors. Additional research is needed to determine what the relationship between Sir William and John Martin, of Bridgetown, Pomeroy is. Whatever it is, it is not father and son.
