Matilda was born about 1835 in Canada.
At the time of the 1870 United States Census, her husband, Lester A Merrill was a 45-year-old Carter, born Vermont, residing in New York. Matilda, 35, kept house and was born in Canada, as was 14-year-old Ida C. Merrill. Their sons - Charles D.W. (11), Frederick J. (10), and Levi L. (8) were born in New York. [1]
Lester passed away before the 1880 census because Matilda was now widowed, aged 44, and working as a wash woman. She lived at Ogdensburg, St Lawrence, New York. Though Matilda was born Canada, her father is shown as born in Ohio, her mother New York. The two youngest son's still lived with her: Frederick N (20) Clerk in Hats and Caps, and Levi L (18) a printer, both born New York. [2]
Matilda passed away in 1903 and is buried in the Ogdensburg Cemetery with Lester. [3]
When Levi married, he said his mother's name was Matilda Martin. to add source
