Charles was born in 1822. He passed away in 1903.

Charles was born in Virginia and moved to Tennessee in 1841. His obituary, dated March 23, 1908, provides details about his career in the Nashville area, noting that he was "engaged in the merchandise and hardware business for several years before the civil war with his uncle, Ralph Martin, on the Public Square." The obituary notes that Charles then went on to be "associated with I.N. DeHart in the contracting business." [1]

Charles was married to Cornelia Frances Childress in 1845; the couple had three children prior to Cornelia's death. [2] In 1855, Charles married Sarah "Sallie" McCall. Charles and Sallie had four children together.
