DNA Research

Sammy Anderson's great x4 grandmother is Rebecca (Martin) Stringfellow (abt.1740-aft.1820). Sammy has DNA matches with descendants of Mildred (5), Susan (1), Charles (8), John (2), Thomas (7), Nancy (3), Pleasant (1), Tabitha (3), Mary (3), and Abraham (1). The amount of matching DNA as well as birth years, relationships, and such is strong evidence that Rebecca is their sibling, and that Thomas and Anne are Rebecca's parents.

Martin.
Editor of the Gelealogical Column:
Dear Sir,--The living descendants of Thomas Martin, Sr., of Albemarle, now in Nelson county, are children and grandchildren of Garrett and Thomas Martin, Esq. Their father was Samuel Martin, the only son of Thomas Martin's son, George. The Rev. Edgar Woods in his History of Albemarle is mistaken as to the home of Thomas Martin's sons, Pleasant and Charles; they did not remain in Virginia. The former went to Tennessee, and the latter to South Carolina. The Martin genealogy compiled by Dr. Samuel Davies Martin, of Kentucky in 1857, distinctly states this fact, and mentions in 1845, having spent a year in the family of his uncle, Charles, thirty years previous to that time in South Carolina. The other Martins, of Nelson County, are descendants of Lieutenant Hudson Martin, a Revolutionary Officer. These two families are not related, though connected by marriage during the nineteenth century.
FROM A DESCENDANT OF THOMAS MARTIN, SR.

Thomas Martin, Sr. was too old to serve in the military, at the time of the American Revolution. Another Thomas Martin (perhaps his son?) born circa 1750, married Susannah Walker. [17]

Quote from John Martin Forum Answering a query about Martha Burwell in this tree (She's wife to COL. John Martin, of Caroline County who died in Ireland of the "silver cup" legend in the colonies)[20]

The first to be born on "American" soil of this Martin family. Argument For The Service As Burgess Of John Martin, Gent. (1683-1756) written by Page Williams, Genealogist for the VA Society of the Colonial Dames of America: Abram Martin (b. 1642) appears in the Va records as early as 1680. He was the father of John Martin, Gent. who was born in VA in 1683, and died in King William Co. VA in 1756. John Martin was a member of the House of Burgesse for King William Co., 1752-1756, dying during the session of 1756, when Francis West was elected in his place. (Standard's Colonial VA Register, pp. 110-135).

John Martin, Gent. (1683-1756) of King William Co. was a large land owner, having acquired land in several different counties in VA. The Albemarle Co. records show that on Feb. 24, 1749, he acquired a tract of land in the Hardware River, and the county Surveyor of John Martin (Styled "Gent." in the index of the surveyor's book of Albemarle) listed 240 acres lying on both sides of the Hardware River, the 20th of December 1754; John Smith, Jr. having been the surveyor. On Aug. 29, 1751, Francis Jerdone, (who married Sarah Macon of Kent Co.) writes to Capt. Hugh O. Crawford of Mr. Seaton "who bought Harry Gain's plantation, which adjoins Jack Martin's in King William Co." (William and Mary Quarterly, Vol. II, p. 160).

The following is from "Plea Book, or First Order Book, Halifax Co. VA 1752-1756, page 495; "Jan.16, 1753, On motion of James Terry, Gent.; "in behalf of John Martin of the County William, Gent., it is ordered that Richard Parsons, John Hix, and John Berryman, do View and value the improvements in the tract of land belonging to the said John Martin, on the North side of Banister River, and make report thereof here to the Third Tuesday in next month". Virginia Gazette, August 27, 1756: "For sale a tract of land in Halifax Co. containing 1616 acres, plats, household furniture, some European goods, household goods, just imported a four wheel chaise, a pole chaise, some good old Madeira wine, and many other things of value. To be sold at the late dwelling house of Col. John Martin in King William Co. Credit will given till the first of June next, the Purchasers giving Bond, and Security to the Executors. "N.B. All persons that are indebted to the said Estate, or have any demands against, are desired to bring in their Accounts in Order to have them adjusted. For that End, Attendance Friday, and Saturday before the day of sale."

From Anne Porcher: Thomas Martin, in his will dated 1792, and recorded in the Clerk's office, Charlottesville, Albemarle Co. VA, Book 3, p. 144, names wife Mary Martin, to whom he gives a plantation in said county, containing 246 acres, and which at her death was to go to their son Abram Martin. All of his other children (by his first wife) are mentioned in his will, except James and Elizabeth who died young. His daughter, Mildred, is mentioned as Mildred Oglesby. There is recorded in the Land Grant Office at Richmond, VA and in Albemarle Co. VA a deed signed "John Martin Gentleman" giving his son, Thomas, Martin lands on Hardware River, Albemarle Co. VA, which land descended from Thomas to his son George, to his son Samuel Woods, to his son John Abram, to his son Henry Shepard Martin whose family still owns the place (1930s I would guess?) The house was burned during the Civil War but was rebuilt and continued in possession of descendents as above stated. (Albemarle Co. Will Book III, p. 174)

Martin-46730 and Martin-4370 appear to represent the same person because: This was previously rejected, but feel it should be completes. but dates and names and the like match. The only daughter cited on 46730 aligns with one of the daughters on 4370, though they have different spouses. Nonetheless, these two Martins are the same person and should be merged. The two Elizabeths can be dealt with as disputed children.
