James Martin is estimated to have been born about 1725 by the age of his wife Ruth Dunham. He was the son of Jonathan C. Martin and Dinah Piatt. James and Ruth were married in the Seventh-Day Baptist Church the 24th February 1746 per marriage records kept by his father-in-law, Reverend Jonathon Dunham.
James appears to have passed at a relatively young age after just 20 years of marriage. His will was dated the 25th of October in 1766 at Piscataway, New Jersey. It was proved in mid January of 1767 so it is assumed he passed away in late 1766. He named his wife Ruth and their children who appear to have all been under the age of 21. He named his father-in-law, Jonathan Dunham, and brother-in-law, Azariah Dunham, as two of his chosen executors along with his friend Joseph Fitz Randolph. James also named two of his own brothers in the body of his will, Peter and Jacob Martin.
