Her mother died, aged thirty-three years, in February, 1868. After her father was sentenced to five years in prison later in the same year, Eliza was placed in the Donaldson Hospital† in Edinburgh. †Donaldson’s Hospital was an orphan hospital and formerly, a school for the deaf.
Miss Martin emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where, in 1910, she was named the sole beneficiary in the last will and testament of her aunt (and stepmother), Catherine Ann Martin, née Gibb.
Miss Eliza Mary Martin died in Pittsburgh on the 3rd March 1940, aged seventy-seven years.
When the 1871 census of Scotland was enumerated, Eliza Mary was eight years of age (born in Edinburgh), and a scholar in the Donaldson Hospital in Edinburgh.
