Biography

James H. Martin was born about 1813, in Kentucky. Possibly, he is a son of James Martin and migrated from Kentucky to Indiana as an infant (see research note below). He was probably a neighbor of Abraham Lincoln.

Also note that the death certificate of his [supposed] son John W states that James was first married to Elizabeth Furis--and that both James and Elizabeth came from Virginia (Kentucky was a colony of Virginia between 1776-1792). HOWEVER, the son John W Martin is the son of James Samuel Martin--not James Holland Martin. Thus, the name of the wife of James Holland Martin remains unknown.

According to the Lincoln Boyhood Historic Research Study, in 1837, a James Martin received a land patent for farmland in Spencer County Indiana. This plot of land, located in Section 32 of Carter Township, is located very near to a plot of land near Little Pigeon Creek purchased by Thomas Lincoln (the father of Abraham Lincoln). Thomas Lincoln settled on his land 15 Oct 1817 and the land patent was dated 6 Jun 1827.[1]

About 1834, James H. Martin married UNKNOWN. Six children were born. Later census data say that all were born in Indiana, suggesting that the family had migrated there no later than 1835. Searching for a marriage record.

Oscar, the last child of this marriage, was born about 1847. Presumably the mother died before the second marriage of James in 1850. The children of James H. Martin from his first marriage:

  1. Eliza J (1835- )
  2. Mary F (1835- ) m James W. Nix (1833- ); 8 children
  3. Allen K (1839- ) m1 Martha E Egnew (1846-1880) on 6 Dec 1868; 2 children, m2 Mary M McCoy (1856-1948)
  4. John W (1843-1933). His death certificate[2] states he is the son of James Martin and Elizabeth Furis/Farris: both of whom were born in Virginia. John W was born in Taylor County, Kentucky. He may be mis-assigned to this Martin line, based on the info in his [orphan] profile--i.e., he is probably the son of James Samuel Martin (1812- aft. 1880), not James Holland Martin (~1813-1871)
  5. Robert D (1844- ) m Elizabeth Davis 17 Mar 1872 (Spencer)
  6. Oscar B (1847- ) m1 Maggie Byers 1 Sep 1870 (Spencer, Indiana), m2 Catherine Killian (1840- )

3 May 1850: James H. Martain married Sarah Hesson in Spencer County Indiana.[3] Sarah's family name was Harrison, and she had had been previously married to Samuel Hesson, who died before 1850. [4]. John Hesson and Samuel Hesson, Sarah's sons, also joined the household.

James H. Martin and Sarah (Harrison) Hesson had 7 children between 1854 and 1865:

  1. Nancy J. (1854- )
  2. Sarah (1855- )
  3. Elizabeth (1860- )
  4. William Henry (1860- ) m Anna McKinney (1865- ) on 3 Sep 1889
  5. Samuel James (1860-1944)
  6. James H. (1863-1930)
  7. Amanda Belle (1865-1944) m Wilford Jefferson Ellis (1861-1949) on 27 Jan 1889; 12 children

On 4 Oct 1866, Following the death of his second wife Sarah (Harrison) Hesson, James H. Martin married Martha Abshire (Kinkade).[5][6] They had one son:

  • Theodore (1867- ) m Carrie Tilley 7 Jun 1910.

The Family Search profile for James H. Martin (K4RH-X7F) says that he died in Spencer County Indiana in 1871 and he is buried in the Martin-Harrison cemetery, located on the farm of John Harrison. This info is unsourced, but it fits circumstantially.
