Emilia did not completely enjoy their time in Coffeyville, Kansas. She especially feared “the storms and the Indians.”

The storms were threatening, “you could see them coming for miles.” And missing the hills of Québec, the open Kansas prairie left them exposed to the unconstrained violence of the monster storms.

One day, hearing a noise, she went into the bedroom to find an Indian holding their one-year baby, Ruby Annah, in his arms. He was prepared to take the baby and exit the open window. Thinking quickly, she called out, “baccie?” As the Indian hesitated, she grabbed several pouches of her husband’s tobacco and held them out. We cannot imagine her terror as the Indian slowly decided his choice. Finally and thankfully, the baby and the "baccie" were exchanged, and the Indian jumped out the window with his prize.

We are not surprised that the rest of their eleven children were born in Québec.
