James was born in 1813 at Blackhouse, Bunkle and Preston, Berwickshire, Scotland. Page 126 of197. Son of John Martin and Isabel Peacock who were unmarried at the time but married in the April of the same year. He married Agnes Brown in the May of 1838 and in the 1841 Census his occupation is given as Agricultural Labourer at Marygold Farm, Bunkle.

1851 he had moved to Billiemains Farm in the same area, occupation Farm Labourer. Still at Billiemains in 1855 his wife Agnes died three weeks after the birth of his son James he was there 9th child but sadly four had had died in their early years. In the April of 1859 James (Widower) remarried to Janet (Jessie) Kerr (Spinster) in the Canongate, Edinburgh, Scotland. Occupation Agricultural Labourer.

By the 1861 Census James and Jessie are residing in a private house in the village of Preston and still an Agricultural Labourer they have three of James first family residing with them and a 11month old son John, to Jessie.

Ten years later 1871and they are staying at Grueldykes Farm on the outskirts of Duns they have three children to Jessie and one remaining adult child from James's first marriage now registering as a farm servant.

1881 Census, now in Longformacus Village, Jessie has passed but James is still on the go with the same family members as ten years previous plus a six year old grand daughter. James is 67. James died on the 29th of August 1888 aged 74 at Lintlaw, Preston, Berwickshire, Scotland. His Death Certificate states cause as Senile Decay. Occupation Ploughman.
