He married Ruth Henderson in 1847.[1] In 1851, they lived with their three children and Ruth's mother in Brackenhill, Ballinderry Parish, County Antrim, where James worked as a ploughman.[2][3]

In 1861, James and Ruth lived with their six children on Pinkertons Land Church Street in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.[4] He worked as a labourer in an iron foundry.[5]
In 1871, James and Ruth lived with five of their children at 63 High Street in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, and James was still a labourer in a foundry.[6]
